Language files

If you want to start from scratch and make a language file, download Template.lng and copy it to yourlanguage.lng. Store the file in the same directory as Audiograbber and open it in a text editor – we recommend UltraEdit if you do not already have a good one. You can run Audiograbber and edit the language file at the same time: use File → Choose Language to reload the file and see your changes.

If you already have a language file and want to update it, download lngcheck.zip (163 KB) and follow the instructions in that program. It checks that every entry has been translated.

Things to keep in mind

  • Line feeds are stored as \n in the language file.
  • Some strings contain variables such as %d, %s or %.2f, exactly as in C. Do not change or remove them, and keep them in the same order relative to each other. They may appear anywhere among the words.
  • Some texts have to fit a fixed space, a button for example. Button labels are padded with trailing spaces so that the icon and the label stay centred together, so a few spaces may be needed to keep the icon on the left. You will not see this in the template file, but if you press End in your editor you will see how far the cursor moves.
  • You will find strings in the template that you cannot see anywhere in the program. Ask us where they belong until we find a better solution.
  • Language files must be given away for free. Everybody is allowed to do whatever they want with them; you cannot claim copyright on a translation.

The CharacterSet line

Every language file begins with a CharacterSet= line. It tells Audiograbber which Windows code page the file is written in. If it is wrong, accented and non-Latin characters are displayed as garbage. The normal setting for Western European languages is DEFAULT_CHARSET; if you are translating into Japanese, use SHIFTJIS_CHARSET instead. These are the charsets that can be used:
