I'm getting sound from the speakers but the volume meter on Line in sampling doesn't move and the recording is so quiet as to be inaudible

I'm not that technical and have looked at various settings but am afraid to mess about too much-

You have to open the sound mixer in Windows and select the proper recording source (like line-in, wave, microphone etc.).
